Pressure Filtration

Textile filter media for the main equipment operating under pressure

Pressure filtration is one of the most established technologies for solid-liquid separation on an industrial scale. As a batch-cycle technology, it is used in processes requiring high dry solids content, particularly with suspensions of fine particles that tend to pack and hinder liquid drainage.

By selecting raw materials and configurations according to the specific process conditions, Testori develops textile filter media for the main equipment operating under pressure: horizontal filter presses, belt presses, vertical tower presses and pressure vessels.

Thanks to vertically integrated operations and constant quality supervision, every filter medium is designed to ensure mechanical strength, dimensional stability and reliable performance.

Pressure filtration solutions for industry

Testori solutions for pressure filtration address a wide range of industrial sectors, each with specific requirements in terms of filter medium performance, filtrate quality and resistance to process conditions.

Main sectors:

  • Mining and refining (copper, iron, zinc, lead, nickel, precious metal and alumina concentrates)
  • Drinking water and wastewater treatment (municipal and industrial plants)
  • Quarries and excavation sites
  • Food & beverage (vegetable and animal oils, sugar, wine, beer, juices)
  • Chemical (special powders and hazardous substances)

Testori filter media ensure effective solid-liquid separation, high dewatering capacity and mechanical stability, thereby contributing to improved filtrate quality and overall efficiency of the production process.

Every solution is designed to integrate seamlessly into the equipment in use, reducing machine downtime and operating costs.

Technical characteristics of fabrics for pressure filtration

Testori filter fabrics for pressure filtration are made with a wide range of polymers: polypropylene, polyester, PBT, polyamide, PTFE and PEEK, combined with different yarn types (monofilament to optimize cake discharge, multi-filament for mechanical strength, staple fiber for maximum particle retention). Several weaves are available: plain, twill, satin and double layer, selected according to the specific process requirements such as separation efficiency, flexibility, cake discharge or mechanical strength.

Every fabric undergoes calendering to reach the required air permeability level (range from 1 to over 5,000 L/dm²/min) and heat setting to ensure dimensional stability at process temperatures.

Advantages of pressure filtration

Pressure filtration stands out for its capacity to ensure high dewatering performance, obtaining cakes with low residual moisture content compared to other solid-liquid separation technologies, reducing the volumes to be disposed of and optimizing the recovery of useful product.

Main operational advantages:

  • Effectiveness in reaching high dry solids content with suspensions characterized by a fine particle size distribution
  • Versatility of configuration, with equipment adaptable to contexts requiring large filtration surfaces in confined spaces

Textile filter media for pressure filtration

The Testori range for pressure filtration includes textile filter media developed for the different equipment found in industrial plants, each designed according to specific operating modes.

Horizontal filter presses

Cloths for horizontal filter presses represent the core product of the Testori offer for solid-liquid separation. The range includes a wide portfolio of configurations: single, overhang (or drape-over), twin with barrel neck, leak-free gasketed; and adapts to plates of varying dimensions, from laboratory scale up to over 2.5 meters in width.

Belt presses

Continuous belts for belt presses are widely used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, where dewatering involves sludge with a high content of adhesive colloidal solids. For these applications, high-drainage mono/mono fabrics are suitable, able to handle suspensions that are difficult to drain while maintaining high dewatering efficiency.

Vertical tower presses

Belts for vertical tower presses are dedicated to the filtration of high-value mineral concentrates and special powders from the chemical industry, applications requiring maximum solids recovery and minimum residual moisture content. The configuration of vertical tower presses also facilitates cake drying with compressed air.

Pressure vessels

Bags for pressure vessels are designed for processes involving the treatment of hazardous substances, maximizing the ratio between filtration surface and machine footprint. Filtration takes place from the outside to the inside of the bag, ensuring uniform cake formation and maximum retention of solid impurities.

Quality control and laboratory

Quality control and laboratory

The Testori R&D laboratory ensures complete characterization of filter media before and after service life, verifying their response to process conditions through the measurement and monitoring of specific distinctive parameters.

Controls cover the entire production chain, from raw material to finished product, ensuring full traceability and complete compliance with project technical specifications. On request, declarations of conformity can be issued according to EU (EC 1935/2004 and EC 10/2011), FDA (CFR 177), GMP protocols and ATEX conductivity tests.

Comparative filtration trials, carried out according to the VDI 2762 protocol, allow the most suitable filter medium to be selected for the specific process conditions, reducing the risk of failure in industrial-scale tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every cloth is manufactured on the basis of the equipment in use at the customer’s site and can be customized on three levels: the fabric, the cloth design and the make-up details. The choice of fiber (polypropylene, polyester, PBT, polyamide, PTFE) and of the weave depends on the process parameters, including the chemical and physical characteristics of the suspension (temperature, pH and particle size of the solids), operating pressure and filter press geometry, and is validated through laboratory tests to verify compatibility with actual process conditions.

These are three distinct pressure filtration technologies. Among those operating in batch cycles, the horizontal filter press is historically the most widespread for industrial solid-liquid separation, thanks to its high versatility. The belt press operates with continuous feed and is mainly used for sludge dewatering in wastewater treatment. The vertical tower press, which also operates in batch cycles, is used for high-purity filtration, typically for mineral concentrates and special powders from the chemical industry.

Testori cloths can be enhanced with accessories designed for the most demanding operating conditions: the Resispam coating to resist abrasion from the incoming sludge, A.C.E.™ anti-corrosion eyelets applied by ultrasonic welding, the GreenTes™ perimeter resin to prevent filtrate leakage, and localized felt or fabric reinforcements for the most stressed areas.

In addition to trials carried out directly on the industrial-scale filter, Testori performs preliminary comparative filtration trials in its own R&D laboratory. These tests allow the most suitable filter medium to be selected for the specific process conditions, reducing the risk of failure in industrial-scale trials and optimizing the operational performance of the filter medium.

Yes, vertically integrated operations allow Testori to develop tailor-made filter media starting from the technical specifications provided by the customer or the OEM. The process includes the following stages: yarn selection, weave definition, finishing, design and make-up details.

Filter media are a critical component of the pressure-filtration system and directly influence filtration rate, cake formation, cake release, filtrate clarity, solids recovery and service life. Because filtration performance depends on the interaction between the suspension, filter media, filtration equipment and operating practice, selecting the appropriate filter media can help improve process efficiency, reduce operating costs and support more reliable filtration performance.
